Chalk Paint: Homemade Style

So, I am sure by now most have heard of or even used some sort of chalk paint! Maybe you have at least heard of the legal debates of who actually coined the term “chalk paint”…not mentioning names here of who claims they did out of fear of being sued! Maybe their first name starts with an A and last name starts with an S… anyway!

The point is lately this paint has been extremely popular, and, well that makes it very profitable! It is still considered a specialty paint or “boutique” paint which gives it a fancy price tag with its fancy category! I have used a couple of the brands on the market. I like them! The problem lies in the price, availability, added shipping rates, waiting periods, etc!

I am, like many people in the US today, on a tight budget! So, if you haven’t heard yet, you can make your own chalk paint for a lot cheaper! The main ingredient in this type of paint is
I have found 3 main recipes for homemade chalk paint and since my two favorite words are “cheap” and “easy” I will share my favorite recipe out of the three!

There are only three ingredients to this recipe: latex or acrylic (water based) paint, plaster of Paris, and water! All three of these are cheap and easy to find! Here are the measurements….

• 1 1/2 cup paint
• 1/2 cup plaster of Paris
• 1/2 cup hot water

For best results mix water and plaster first and then add and mix to paint. It’s best to make with flat or satin paint. In my experience I can’t tell the difference between this and buying boutique brand! I have painted many pieces of furniture and even walls with this homemade recipe!

Tip of the Day: Lowes sells their big brand paint in sample sizes which cost around $3 for 8 ounces! Sign up to receive special offers and you may get a voucher for a free sample size each season!
